Learn About The Work

Feldenkrais

The Feldenkrais Method™ is an embodied learning practice that uses gentle, mindful movement to improve how the brain and body communicate. Through slow, exploratory sequences, the method helps refine your movement patterns, enhance learning capacity, and support the nervous system in reorganizing itself for greater ease, efficiency, and adaptability.

Developed by physicist and engineer Moshe Feldenkrais, the method is grounded in principles from neuroscience, biomechanics, motor learning, and human development. Modern research on neuroplasticity confirms that the brain continually reorganizes itself based on experience. The Feldenkrais Method works directly with this capacity for change. By bringing attention to how you move, sense, and coordinate yourself, you provide the nervous system with new information that allows it to update long-standing patterns and discover more effective ones.

Much of human movement is learned very early in life. The ways you breathe, roll, crawl, sit, stand, and walk form foundational patterns that shape your posture, habits, and even your thinking. Once these patterns become familiar, the nervous system tends to repeat them automatically. Unless something interrupts them, they may remain unchanged for decades.

For example, you might brush your teeth every day with unnecessary tension in your shoulder simply because that is the pattern your nervous system learned long ago. When you explore the same action in a Feldenkrais lesson, you may discover that your pelvis, spine, and breathing can support the movement more efficiently. As the nervous system senses this new possibility, it reorganizes the action so the shoulder no longer has to work so hard. What seemed like a fixed habit becomes a field of possibilities.

This process is not about forcing change or stretching the body beyond its limits. Instead, it works through curiosity, variation, and attention. Research in motor learning shows that the brain learns best when movements are slow, novel, and free of strain. When the nervous system feels safe, it becomes more receptive to learning. Feldenkrais lessons intentionally create these conditions, allowing the brain to refine coordination with minimal effort.

As your nervous system discovers easier and more integrated ways of moving, it also strengthens the neural networks involved in attention, perception, and problem-solving. Many practitioners notice improvements not only in physical comfort but also in mental clarity, creativity, and insight. When habitual tension decreases and the brain receives richer sensory information from the body, cognitive resources become available for imagination and innovation.

This is one reason the Feldenkrais Method has long been used by artists, performers, musicians, athletes, and innovators. By expanding your sensory awareness and refining coordination, the practice cultivates a state where learning becomes fluid and spontaneous. Movement exploration becomes a laboratory for creativity. Each lesson invites you to experiment, notice subtle differences, and discover new options for action.

Rest and variation are also central to the process. The nervous system requires pauses to integrate new information. In Feldenkrais lessons, periods of rest allow the brain to consolidate learning, much like sleep supports memory formation. These pauses often reveal surprising shifts in comfort, breathing, and clarity.

Through repeated experiences of ease, support, and curiosity, the nervous system gradually recalibrates what it considers “normal.” Instead of organizing movement around tension or effort, it begins to orient toward efficiency, breath, and internal support. This changes not only how you move but also how you respond to life’s demands.

In this way, Feldenkrais is not simply about improving movement. It is about expanding your self-image. Your self-image is the internal map your brain uses to organize action: how you sense your body, what movements you believe are possible, and how you coordinate intention with action. As this map becomes richer and more accurate, your ability to adapt, learn, and create expands. The qualities cultivated in a Feldenkrais lesson naturally extend into daily life.

You may notice that it becomes easier to sit comfortably while working.
You may intuitively sense when your eyes or brain need rest from screens.
You may become aware of how your breath changes in different situations and recognize what supports openness or contraction.

You may discover that the way you were sitting on the couch made it difficult to stand up easily, and suddenly a simple shift restores your freedom to move.

Over time, movement can become more spontaneous, playful, and responsive. The nervous system learns that it has choices. And this is the heart of the method: expanding choice. What you teach your nervous system on the floor of a Feldenkrais lesson becomes available to you in everyday life. The more options your nervous system perceives, the more skillfully you can respond to challenges, express creativity, and act in alignment with your intentions. When movement becomes easier, you often feel better. When you feel better, your thinking becomes clearer. When your thinking becomes clearer, your actions become more intentional. Through this process, the Feldenkrais Method invites you to listen deeply to your body and its intelligence. It offers a way to recalibrate your nervous system on your own terms, integrating awareness, movement, and learning into a coherent whole. You can practice these principles anywhere and at any time.

What Is Energy Healing? A Science-Informed Guide to Biofield Energy Work

Energy healing is an umbrella term for practices that interact with the body’s biofield, the complex field of energy and information generated by living systems. Modalities such as Reiki, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, and Qigong are often grouped together in research under the category of biofield therapies. These approaches aim to influence the body’s energetic and nervous system patterns to support healing, relaxation, and overall well-being.

Although the language of “energy” may sound mystical, modern science increasingly recognizes that biological systems are deeply energetic in nature. Your body is not only chemical. It is also electrical, electromagnetic, and informational. Understanding this energetic dimension of biology is helping researchers explore how subtle energy practices may influence health.

The Biofield: The Body’s Energetic Communication System

The term biofield was introduced by researchers to describe the dynamic field of energy and information that surrounds and permeates living organisms. This field is thought to coordinate biological processes and communication between different systems of the body.

Science already measures several energetic processes that are part of this larger system:

• The heart produces a strong electromagnetic field that can be detected several feet from the body
• The brain generates electrical rhythms that regulate perception, movement, and cognition
• Cells communicate through electrical signals and light emissions called biophotons
• The nervous system uses electrochemical signals to transmit information throughout the body

Together, these processes form an intricate network of signaling that helps maintain balance and regulate physiological functions. Energy healing traditions suggest that disturbances in this larger regulatory field can influence physical, emotional, and cognitive states. Practices like Reiki aim to restore coherence within this system, helping the body return to a more balanced state.

The Physics Behind Energy Healing

From the perspective of physics, the universe is composed of fields and vibrations interacting across space.

Matter itself emerges from patterns of energy within these fields.

Several physical principles are often used to help explain how energy healing may influence biological systems.

Fields

A field is a region of influence surrounding an object.

For example, a magnet generates a magnetic field that affects nearby objects. Similarly, living organisms generate electromagnetic fields through cellular and neural activity.

Energy healing practices may interact with these biological fields.

Resonance

Resonance occurs when one vibrating system influences another.

A simple example is two tuning forks. If one is struck, the other will begin vibrating at the same frequency.

In biological systems, resonance can be seen in processes such as brainwave synchronization and heart-brain coherence. Some researchers suggest that energy healing may work partly through physiological resonance, where a practitioner’s regulated nervous system helps guide the client toward a more coherent state.

Information Transfer

Another emerging idea in biofield science is that the biofield may function as a regulatory information system.

Instead of transferring large amounts of physical energy, subtle signals within this field may help coordinate cellular activity and biological processes. While these mechanisms are still being investigated, they provide a possible framework for understanding how subtle energy interactions might influence health.

What Scientific Research Says About Energy Healing

Research into energy healing is still developing, but several studies have begun examining its effects on physiology.

In experimental settings, researchers have observed changes during energy healing sessions such as:

• Increased skin temperature and circulation
• Shifts in brainwave activity associated with relaxation
• Reduced stress markers
• Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system

For example, research explored by the Institute of Noetic Sciences has used tools such as EEG and thermal imaging to study what occurs during healing sessions. These studies suggest that measurable physiological shifts may occur when practitioners engage in focused intention and healing practices. Although the exact mechanisms remain an open scientific question, many findings point toward nervous system regulation as a key factor.

Energy Healing and the Nervous System

One of the most widely reported effects of energy healing practices is a shift in the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system has two primary branches:

• The sympathetic nervous system, associated with stress and survival responses
• The parasympathetic nervous system, associated with rest, healing, and regeneration

Modern life often keeps people locked in chronic stress states. Energy healing sessions frequently help the body shift toward parasympathetic activation.

When the nervous system enters this state:

• Muscles soften
• Breathing deepens
• Circulation improves
• Immune and repair processes activate

This shift also supports learning and neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself through new experiences.

Energy Work, Awareness, and Human Potential

Energy work often pairs naturally with embodied learning practices such as meditation, somatic movement, and the Feldenkrais Method. These approaches share a common understanding: the body and nervous system are self-organizing learning systems. When the system feels safe and supported, it becomes capable of reorganizing itself in more efficient and creative ways.

This can lead to:

• Improved movement and posture
• Emotional balance
• Increased creativity and insight
• Greater resilience and adaptability

Rather than forcing change, energy work supports the conditions where the body’s natural intelligence can emerge.

Energy Healing as a Practice of Coherence

At its core, energy healing is about restoring coherence within the body’s systems.

Coherence occurs when different physiological processes synchronize and work together efficiently.

When this happens:

Movement becomes easier
Thinking becomes clearer
Creativity flows more naturally
The body can heal and adapt more effectively

Energy work helps create the conditions for this coherence to arise.

In this sense, healing is not something imposed from the outside.
It is something the body already knows how to do when the right conditions are present.
